Job Description

Job Purpose

The role of the post holder primarily responsible for driving network performance improvements to ROP’s network and operations with primary responsibility for the TETRA, Power, Microwave, IPMPLS, NOC Systems, IP Telephony & Computer Aided Dispatch(CAD) systems, enhancing the customer experience.
The system engineer forms part of a team responsible for the resolution of, complex and repeat issues (Problem Management), received from the Tier 1 team. They will be responsible for generating and driving initiatives to improve performance of service operations and enhancing the diagnostic capabilities Operations and Maintenance function.
Carrying out root cause investigations of both Major and repeat incidents with a view to reducing the number of incidents and improving customer satisfaction is also a key aspect of this role.

Key Responsibilities

Performance responsibility for the ROP Network designated as primary to their role.
Provide Tier 2 support to for fault resolution when incident cases are received from Tier 1
Perform routine Health/Sanity checks across all devices in the Tetra, Microwave, IP/MPLS, IPT/CAD systems
Improve maintenance performance in Network Availability, Time to Repair and Repeat faults.
Identification and resolution of generic repeat equipment issues. This shall be done in line with the Problem and knowledge Management Process.
Manage key supplier groups to ensure the achievement of root cause analysis for generic and complex equipment issues.
Capacity Management. Identify capacity related issues
Manage all historical data backup activities as well as disk storage.
Network Change & Configuration Management (SW Upgrades; patch updates etc)
Support with Acceptance Test Procedures
Conduct reviews of major service failures and incidents and ensure corrective action plans are compiled and the learning completed.
Audit cross-functional and cross divisional activities within the fault management process and ensure learning is documented and followed through.
Liaise with customer-facing teams to ensure Customer Satisfaction is measured and maintained when delivering network enhancements
Responsible for ensuring cost efficiency is met when considering and delivering initiatives to enhance network stability.
Asset management
Liaise with the Tier3 as well as vendor support teams and as point of contact at senior technical level
CAD Related Issues; Control Room enhancements etc; FleetMap Management, Redesign & Validation

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of mobile telecommunications network, and a background in TETRA
Sound knowledge of Microwave & IP/MPLS network preferably Nokia Networks
Good Knowledge of NOC systems, Power/Passive components, IP Telephony & Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems.
Considerable experience and a proven track record within an operations, maintenance and Network Management discipline.
A disciplined and analytical approach to complex issues
Confidence in decision making abilities and dealing effectively with unexpected situations, taking advantage of opportunities and overcoming problems.
The ability to influence and negotiate with both internal and external parties.
Experience in the management of suppliers.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree/Software/Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
Relevant experience of at least 10 years
ITIL Foundation certification or equivalent
Experience in any of the following domains such as Core, IP networks, Security engineering, Network engineering, Systems engineering, IP transport, Microwave and IPMPLS
MS office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, Visio, Project) – advanced
Cisco certifications(e.g CCNA) preferred
