Best tips for remote work

Remote work has become a lifetime tendency since the last pandemic. Like millions of employees or freelancers, there is a great chance that even during this year at some point, you have had to figure out how remote work, functions.

Unfortunately, for many people, there is no lifetime guide or a manual on how remote work should be.

If you have been in this situation, you know that the challenges of not working in an office are real.

However even being challenging, remote work, has a lot of advantages and benefits that can be valuable for a lot of us. With that in mind, here are some tips that can help you become less stressed and more productive when adopting remote work.

In fact, recruitment agencies understood also the importance of remote work which is why they are offering a lot of opportunities to surf on that tendency and get more chances to attract flexible candidates.

1.     Start with another task first

One of the most difficult things about remote work is that your home is the place where you do everything else. This means you can easily lose track of the line that separates your personal life from your work life while doing remote work.

In fact that thin line is quite important since it helps to recharge your batteries, in order to get ready for what will come ahead. In order to change your routine, start your day by doing something else in the morning before starting your work. This means that you don’t have to start by checking your emails. Instead, start your day by doing some physical exercise, go for a walk, make a healthy breakfast or simply read a book.

2. Organize smartly your time

After interviewing a group of entrepreneurs who have been adapting remote work for years I figure out how they succeeded to structure their day in the perfect way.

They started by creating several blocks of time for every kind of activity. It is the method of chunking or organizing your time.

Besides freelancers, this method has been used by several direct hiring and payroll companieswho have seen a lot of improvement in their employees’ work.

When adopting this method you can have a block of time early in the morning for heavy tasks and another one in the afternoon to deal with administrative tasks like responding to emails. The main important thing in remote work isn’t scheduling each task but grouping similar missions into groups or buckets and doing them together.

3. Limit your space

When you practice remote work you need to draw the lines or create boundaries. So start by creating a defined workspace resembling all the tools, resources, and technologies you may need to get things done for you.

So even if you don’t have an office in your home, you still have to set up a defined spot that you can always use during your remote work. Which means you can’t work from your couch, kitchen table, or bed. Hence, if you need to sign on to a zoom meeting, you have to choose a professional place where you can hold a meeting.

4.     Shut your door

Sometimes all you need to do is to focus on your work. So you better work in a place that is dedicated to your remote work, you simply need to shut your door and do your remote work in a quiet place. This simple task will help you to eliminate distractions by creating a barrier between your working area and anything else that can happen. Plus it should draw a clear line to anyone who lives in your house that when your door is shut that means that you are working.

5.     Turn off any kind of distraction

The distractions outside of your door are not the only thing that can suck your energy and productivity. So whether you work for a small company or a large one, you are on your own now, and you may work on something that includes collaborating with others. Generally, those people will contact you via email, text message, or slack.

That is completely ok, the problem is that each time, they will do so, your mobile will buzz, send notifications, banners to let you know. So give yourself permission to turn off notifications, especially if you want to concentrate.

Tip: besides the “do not disturb” sign on your phone, or computer, many applications let you define priority contacts who can still reach you even when you are practicing remote work.

6.     Take some breaks during the day

One of the most challenging aspects of remote working is knowing when you must stop because no one is going to tell you it’s break time. Which says that it is up to you to create your own routine. Don’t underestimate the power of a good break to fill in your batteries.

Many studies have indicated that working remotely can lead to burnout if you are not capable of setting clear limits.

Take a break, plan a date night with your family, take your dog on a walk or do some exercise.

Even if you don’t feel like that make it a habit to get up, walk, stretch and do some exercise to relax your muscles.
